It started with a visit to Upstate New York. When thirty-nine year old software engineer Jerry Williamson and wife Denise witness the midnight bedlam at Ironman Lake Placid and the throng is moved to tears. The loudest cheers go to the stragglers, the Ironman triathletes who find a way to drag themselves across the line before the midnight deadline. Their reward? A roar from the crowd loud enough to drown out the space shuttle, sweaty hugs with family, and the coveted call that every triathlete lives for, “You are an Ironman!” The moment changes Jerry for life as he signs up for the next year’s race, wondering what he is getting himself into.

While Year of the Ironman chronicles the challenges that Jerry could never have imagined when he started his year of intensive training, his story is really about chasing a dream. His insider view of an extreme lifestyle offers hope and encouragement to those wearied by life’s routines.

Year of the Ironman eBook Jerry Williamson with Andrew Straka

What makes this book so good is Jerry's attention to detail in his training. His meticulous approach is undoubtedly the reason he has been so successful in his athletic pursuits. It doesn't gain five stars, however, for a couple of reasons. One, there were several typo's and gramatical errors. While this is normally not a big deal several came at inopportune times that threw the flow of the book completely off.

While I truly appreciate his attemtion to detail in his training, I longed for more reality in other areas of his life. The people who buy this book are like me: family man with a job that I allow to take up too much of my time. Thus, I want to know more about the personal struggles, the relationship issues, the day-to-day struggles that most of us face and how Jerry handled them. Once again, this is another in a long line of books written by "every day people" that neglect the realism part. The lone chapter by Jerry's wife hit the spot somewhat when she talked of her jealousy over his training, her fears of him having an internet affair, and her having to take the brunt of running the household without Jerry around. People need to know about these struggles so they can see how they were handled. And how to be on the lookout for them.

I also would have like to know what his nutrition plan was throughout training and racing. Aside from the mental part of competing, nutrition is king. Those of us who have little confidence on how to approach nutrition could benefit greatly with that info.

Overall it was a great book and a good, easy read. Other than those areas I mentioned above, I am very glad I bought it and have recommended it to aspiring tri-athletes who are friends of mine.

Year of the Ironman eBook Jerry Williamson with Andrew Straka Reviews

The Year of the Ironman explains the real sacrifices needed to finish an Ironman It was realistic and explained you can't just do it yo have to put the time in
I thoroughly enjoyed "Year of the Ironman" I thought it was both an informative and interesting account of the author's Ironman journey as well as an inspiration to others who may be interested in pursuing their own dream of an Ironman.
As a triathlete who has only done the Half Ironman, this book gave a great look into the requirement needed to take on 140.6 from workouts, through smaller races up to Lake Placid. I'd recommend it.
Great read for any Ironman fan. I like his honesty with trying to juggle training and family.
I really enjoyed this book. I am taking the same journey and can relate to a lot of his struggles and victories. Very well written and moves along at a good pace. I was cool that his wife recalled her experience as a Iron spouse.
This was only the second book I have ever purchased for my kindle that I couldn't finish. Another reader summed it up perfectly. This was really just a repackaged trianing journal. Also, the author was too whiney, fake humble, and the constant references to his religion seemed forced into the narrative. If you are looking for a more enjoyable triathlon book, I recommend "Can't Swim, Can't Bike, Can't Run."
I am currently training for my 2nd Ironman Triathlon, have a busy job so am always looking for information on how other mortals do this. While this book didn't necessarily answer these concerns, it was inspiring and reignited the passion for the sport iof triathlon in me. The author talks a lot about how he neglected his family, but doesn't really talk much about his job and the impact his training had on his job. I found the frequent references to his religion a bit annoying, but understand that he feels strongly about his faith...plus "whatever gets you through it".... I suppose, although I find it difficult to believe that God really cares whether I or anybody else finishes their , admittedly, self-involved pursuit of completing an Ironman triathlon....i still found his training regimen impressive and inspiring and would recommend this book for somebody interested in signing up for an Ironman. He doesn't sugat-coat the dedication it takes. Although I have felt way more tired than he ever lets on. I liked his wife's perspective, since it showed the sometimes ambiguous feelings that loved ones have towards the single-minded athlete that the Ironman demands.
